Unwanted calls and texts in Maine: what the rules say

Maine restricts certain automated sales calls, including calls using an automated device or artificial/prerecorded voice. For covered automated solicitation calls, the law limits calls to weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Maine time and no more than one call to a number in an eight-hour period. A separate telemarketing law addresses Do Not Call lists.

Where the rules draw a line

Maine’s required registry may use the federal National Do Not Call Registry. Statutory exceptions apply. A separate text-related caller-ID provision is not a general ban on marketing texts.

What this can mean for a consumer

The Attorney General may seek an injunction, civil penalties, and other specified relief under the telephone-solicitation law. The reviewed provisions do not promise consumers a fixed payment for each call.

Keep the details

Save the full text thread, call log, voicemails, dates and times, the company or product named, and any reply asking the sender to stop. Those details can help show what happened; they do not establish by themselves that a law was violated.
