Unwanted calls and texts in Michigan: what the rules say
Michigan has separate laws governing recorded telephone solicitations, caller identification, and certain commercial calls at night. The reviewed state solicitation provisions define covered contacts around telephone calls and do not establish a general Michigan spam-text rule.
Where the rules draw a line
Michigan uses the federal National Do Not Call Registry as its state list for covered residential telemarketing calls. Each statute has separate exceptions and requirements.
What this can mean for a consumer
For a qualifying violation under the Home Solicitation Sales Act, a consumer who suffers loss may seek actual damages or $250, whichever is greater, plus reasonable attorney fees. A separate recorded-ad statute has its own remedy; criminal fines are not consumer damages.
Keep the details
Save the full text thread, call log, voicemails, dates and times, the company or product named, and any reply asking the sender to stop. Those details can help show what happened; they do not establish by themselves that a law was violated.
